About the Recipe
A classic of British cooking that makes the most of any and all fruit you have available in any combination you want.
The classic is of course the apple crumble but you can add spices, berries, change the main fruit to rhubarb, pear, peach, and other countless variations.

Ingredients
For the crumble
100g granulated sugar (worth trying with 50/50 dark brown and granulated)
110g cold butter (I suggest trying salted butter as this is quite nice)
Pinch of salt (can add more if using unsalted butter and you like the slight saltiness)
180g plain flour
One tablespoon of oats to top the crumble - not required but strongly recommended
For the fruit
4-6 apples depending on size
50-100g granulated sugar depending on how sweet apples are and how sweet you want the filling
Optional:
Cinnamon (around 2 teaspoons)
Nutmeg (if using with cinnamon then 1/3 of the quantity of cinnamon)
Blackberries (1/4 of the apples' quantity)
Preparation
For the fruit
Ensure the fruit is roughly bite sized (so halved blackberries if slightly big, diced rhubarb, roughly chopped apples, quartered pears, etc).
Mix in the fruit with sugar, place in a baking dish and into the oven at 160 C whilst you prepare the crumble mixture.
For the crumble
Combine flour, sugar and butter: mix together with fingers until slightly sandy. You can also use a food processor but ensure that it remains slightly breadcrumb-y and not too overprosessed.
Pour the mixture over the fruit. Press together lightly with a fork or spoon. Top with the oats and a sprinking of sugar.
Increase the heat of the oven to 200C and cook for around 40 minutes. Let it cool slightly before serving as difficult as it may be.
